Week of Sept. 3rd
Tunguruhua  Erupts! This 5,000 meter high volcano located in Ecuador, erupts about once every 90 years!

Our Week

Tuesday:  Finish Lava Flow Procedure - run first set of trials

Wednesday-Thursday:  Review Class Lava Flow Data - run 2nd set of trials

Friday:  1.  Wrap of Lava Flow  2.  Science is Measurement Quiz

Sometimes lava is not the only thing that causes fire on our planet!  In this picture elk try to avoid this sweeping fire by standing in this river in Montana.  Where in the US is another forest fire causing major widespread damage?

Shield Volcanoes

Volcanoes are also common on other planets!  This is a shield volcano on Mars - it is the largest volcano in the solar system - Olympus Mons.

  3. The lava would cause more damage than a forest fir but I think the forest fire would be more dangerous.

  4. The lava probably travels slower than the forest fire in Yosemite.

  6. I am wondering if a forest fire could be more dangerous than lava or a volcanoe?

  7. The lava would probably cool faster in the water depending on what the temperature of the water is.

  8. I think that a forest fire would spread faster than lava because fire catches on things when lava just flows.

  9. The other forest fire that's going on in the U.S. around this time is in Yosemite. This forest fire and the one in Yosemite are very similar due to the fact that they're both very widespread and they're both destroying many habitats.

  11. I am wondering how a volcano can get that high.

  12. I think that that the Rim Fire in Yosemite National park is probably spreading faster than lava from a volcano because lava is slower than a fire and might have trouble catching something on fire in the first place, while fire can spread really fast because the brush and trees are fuel for the fire.

  13. Which causes more destruction, a volcano or a forest fire?

  14. I agree with Anna, and it depends where you are if fire or lava is more common.

  15. I feel bad for all the animals that die from these volcanos like St.hellens. 'Washington Department of Game estimated that 11,000 hares, 6,000 deer, 5,200 elk, 1,400 coyotes, 300 bobcats, 200 black bears, and 15 mountain lions died from the pyroclastic flows of the 1980 eruption.'

  17. I think lava would cause more devastation to humans and there lives because it is more random and is hard to predict when a volcano will erupt. People will have less time to get out of the area.

  18. another place in the U.S. that a fire has broken out is Yosemite National Park.

  19. Forest fires can really spread, especially when it is really dry. Lava usually travels slower and spreads less than a forest fire does, but forest fires can usually be more controlled.

  20. After further research, Olympus Mons, the tallest volcano in the solar system, is 22 km high. Mount Everest, the tallest mountain on earth, is only 8 km high.

  21. The Forest fires and lava are both very deadly to humans, plants and animals, but with one is more deadly? I think that lava is more deadly, that is just a guess.

  22. I think that maybe a forest fire would be more dangerous than the lava, because I think that it'll spread faster than the lava taking its time moving down the volcano.

  23. It seems like the lava would travel slower, but the forest fire might affect the environment more.

  25. There is another wild fire in California. It is in a forest very close to Yosemite park. It has been going on for a while, starting on August 27.

  26. I think forest fire would not be as bad. But depending on the temperature near the volcano inside and out, can affect how fast it may flow. Erosion obviously is a big factor, because the angle of the slope may change overtime, which will then affect how fast the lava would flow down the slope.

  27. I ready that olympus mon is 3 times the size of mount everest. Also, Wildfires are bad for wildlife but good for plant life because if there are big trees taking up all the nutrients then new things cannot grow. Fires burn those down and give new trees a chance to grow.

  29. The lava would be more deadly to humans than a forest fire, because we see the forest fire happening and we can try to put it out or contain it, but with volcanoes you don't have time to see when it starts and you can't contain the lava because the temperature is too hot
