Question of the Week - Explain the hot spot volcanic system going on in Hawaii.   Why is Hawaii a chain of islands, each with a dormant volcano on it - except for the big island of Hawaii pictured above?  What do plate movements have to do with this system?

  1. The volcano isn't dormant because it is over a geological hot spot. When the plate moves, and moves an island off the hot spot, the volcano will become dormant.-A.J. Scott

  2. The Hawaiian islands are a chain of islands with dormant volcanoes because the volcanoes created Hawaii, when they were over hot spots. Since the Earth's plates moved, the volcanoes were no longer over a hot spot and had no more lava pouring out of it. The big island of Hawaii does have an active volcano because it is the only island over a hot spot, which is where lava comes out from the Earth's core
