I am sure you recognize the Midwest of the United States as seen from space!  Look how close radiation from the Sun is to us creating auroras to the north!
 Questions of the Week

Pictured above is the tallest volcano in the solar system - Olympus Mons - it is 3 times the height of Mt. Everest!  This volcano is located on Mars, and it is dormant.  Actually, there are no active volcanoes on Mars - why not? Ideas?

Can you match each land form to its topo map? (Topos are seen from above - land forms from the side)

  1. Mars does not have any active volcanoes because there are no tectonic plates and since the "mantle" is solid, there is no magma to keep the volcano active.

  2. 1.) Mars has 20 volcanoes; however they are dormant. My prediction for this is that there has not been any tectonic plate pushing up the magma or reducing pressure for magma to raise. Therefore the magma flowing from the hot spot could run unabated for many years, this is also the reason the volcanoes there are much larger than ones on earth.

    1. 1.) I forgot to add that the plates have not been moving for many years because of some relation with the spinning of the core.

  5. My prediction is that on Mars, there is no plate movement and Mars has cooled down so there is no magma to fuel the volcanoes.
