Question of the Week
Indonesian Megathrust Earthquake |
In December of 2004, a massive earthquake - 9.0 - occurred in the Indian Ocean causing a tsunami that killed close to 300,000 people. The megaquake shortened our day
by about three microseconds,
and may also have tweaked the Earth's rotational wobble.
The earthquake occurred as the Indian tectonic plate slid further beneath the Burma tectonic plate. What does this megaquake have in common with the megaquake that happened in Japan last year?
Can you answer these questions: Why do earthquakes happen? How are seismic waves used to measure earthquakes?
Can you answer these questions: Why do earthquakes happen? How are seismic waves used to measure earthquakes?
Earthquakes happen when plates that are subducting or moving past each other and get caught. When the pressure builds up and releases the rocks try to reform into their original form, which form P waves and S waves. These waves travel through the earth and shake the ground, the measure of the shaking from the waves measures earthquakes.
ReplyDeleteCould an earthquake be prevented by placed a substance between the fault to stop the rubbing of the plates?
