Week of April 22nd

Newton is considered to be the greatest scientist of his era - maybe even of all time.  Some of his most famous accomplishments include:  Laws of Motion and Gravity that revolutionized science, invented Calculus, invented the reflecting telescope, discovered that white light was actually made of a spectrum of colors, helped to further advance practices and ideas of chemistry.

On May 14, 2010, a small piece of wood from the same apple tree that Isaac Newton formulated his ideas about motion from, (remember the apple falling from the tree story), was taken aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis for a trip to the space station.  Pictured below is the astronaut taking the piece of wood to space and the actual piece of very famous wood.  Why is this event so appropriate and how is it related to Newton's First Law of Motion?

Week of April 15th
Pictured above is an artist's impression the space probe New Horizons - currently on its way to the Kuiper Belt where Pluto and the other Dwarf Planets hang out.  This space probe is the fastest man-made object ever created - achieving a top speed of 36, 373 mph!  Rock on little probe!
